In 2019 Flat Earth FC, a Madrid based team, became the first football club in the world to represent an idea rather than a geographic location.
Instigated by ex-football player Javi Poves, he took over a relatively unknown, third division football club, Mostoles Balompie, before renaming it Flat Earth FC. “Football is the most popular sport and has the most impact worldwide, so creating a club dedicated to the flat earth movement is the best way to have a constant presence in the media,” says Poves.
Ahead of Flat Earth FC first match, VICE sent me out to follow the team from Madrid to Asturias. We wanted to find out if they really believe Earth is flat and if they could secure a victory against an ever so mundane, heliocentric team.

The founder of Flat Earth FC, Javi Poves, became known to the public as the “Anti-System” player when he quit football some years ago because he thought it was a corrupt and rotten system.
Javi sees the club as a marketing tool to spread the word on how we’ve all been lied to in regards to the shape of the Earth and expect to gain popularity and reach the Second Division in one or two years.
