HOLLYWOOD PORNSTARS
MONEY

MUSIC VIDEO

"The day before the shoot, I had a nightmare where the thousands of chocolate coins were melting under the heat of the spotlights and the whole set was ruined".

Ok, so this is an old project, but that has a very special place in my heart. We're back in 2006, TV's are not even HD yet. The young Belgian rock band Hollywood Pornstars produced by Parisian label Naïve is looking for a music video for its single Money

After listening to the song for a few times, the lyrics got stuck in my mind and quickly an image of a rain of golden coins showed up in my mind.

Money
That's all I have it's my money
That's what you call me for honey
I'm not gonna give it

Shooting on a black infinite backdrop was essential to create a neutral, dreamy environment, where the only colour would come from the coins and other golden elements like watches or instrument parts.

A surreal rain of golden coins starts to fall from the sky and slowly drives the band members crazy.

Money and greed. The tension ultimately leads to an explosive and epic fight. The band, blinded by jealousy and greed,  gets out of control. I wanted the audicence to feel like in someones mind.

When we presented the idea to the label, they loved it and pre-production started. The surprise came on my first meeting with the band:

"We don't  like the idea. Actually, we thought about something shot inside a supermarket maybe."
– Antony Sinatra, singer.

The band didn't like the concept and wasn't keen to be involved in a "fight scene" as they felt it would depict them negatively. By chance, the manager and the label insisted to move on with our original idea.

Possibly influenced by my graphic designer (dark) past, I included shiny golden typography, creating a clashing visual reference to western movies and hip-hop  culture.

It has been a big guess to calculate the amount of coins required. At the end of the shoot, we had only two boxes left.

47.000 Belgian chocolate coins were necessary to create the golden rain.
Some were eaten in the process.

We shot on Super 16 film, which represented a challenge for the slow-motion sequence when the frame rate reached up to 120fps.

As the band didn't want to perform the fight scene, the manager suggested to get a few packs of beers on set to relax everyone. It worked.
